Security and safety are at the heart of the CCI-NC's mission

Security and safety are strategic challenges for an airport. Since being entrusted with these missions in 2009, the CCI has implemented all actions to ensure an optimal level of security and safety. Despite the Covid crisis, the CCI has continued to install new equipment for baggage screening in recent years.

Security, related to the prevention of accidental events, and safety, related to preventive measures against intentional malicious acts, were long provided by the State at Nouméa-La Tontouta Airport, which supervised passenger and baggage screening until 2009. After that date, the safety mission was transferred to the CCI, the airport's manager. Since the end of 2002, Nouméa-La Tontouta Airport has been equipped with an In Hold Baggage Screening System (IFBS) compliant with international regulations, equipped with an Explosive Detection System (EDS) installed on the conveyor belt, downstream from the check-in counters. Since then, the CCI has consistently upgraded the equipment in line with technological advancements and requirements imposed by the Directorate of Civil Aviation. The Chamber took advantage of the low traffic in 2021 due to the Covid crisis, which also meant a reduced impact on operations, to upgrade the baggage screening machines to meet the Category 3 standards.

An airport meeting the latest standards

For several months, the CCI teams have coordinated the project with their partners: the Directorate of Civil Aviation of New Caledonia, the dedicated gendarmerie brigade for air transport (BGTA), airlines, ground handling companies, and the subcontractor responsible for security services, with the assistance of ADP Ingénierie for project management. The Category 3 explosive detection equipment, applicable to all airports handling more than 200,000 passengers per year, was received at the end of 2022, ensuring the highest level of security for passengers and users of the airport platform. Complying with regulatory requirements for security and safety is at the core of the CCI's mission as the manager of the Nouméa-Tontouta platform, responsible for its operation, development, and maintenance of the infrastructure.
